A3TEX Series

A3TEX Archaeology & Archaeometry of Ancient Textile Series is the scientific series devoted to publishing the results of research activities promoted by or connected with the A3TEX Interdepartmental Research Center at Sapienza University of Rome.
A3TEX Series welcomes monographic studies, collective volumes, excavation and survey reports, and conference proceedings that contribute to the advancement of research on Textile Heritage from antiquity to the post-antique period, across the Mediterranean and beyond. The series is dedicated to the documentation, analysis, interpretation, and conservation of archaeological and historical textiles, and of their broader cultural, technological, and economic contexts.
The Textile Heritage is approached in this series as a complex and multidimensional phenomenon, inherently transdisciplinary and deeply embedded in human history. Textiles are explored not only as material artifacts but also as vehicles of identity, ritual, social status, and gender expression. The scope of A3TEX Series thus extends to the reconstruction of past ecosystems, resource procurement, chaîne opératoire, technological know-how, artisanal practices, and systems of production and exchange that sustained Textile Cultures throughout history.
The scientific and methodological foundation of A3TEX Series lies in the integration of archaeological, archaeometric, anthropological, and conservation-based approaches. It promotes innovative research strategies that combine material analysis, experimental archaeology, advanced diagnostics, and non-invasive or micro-invasive techniques for the study and preservation of organic and inorganic textile materials. Emphasis is also placed on the development of novel and green products dedicated to the conservation of textile materials, the application of imaging and digital documentation technologies, and the implementation of open-access platforms for the management and dissemination of Textile Heritage data.
In line with the mission of the A3TEX Sapienza Research Center, A3TEX Series also encourages works engaging with digital humanities, conservation science, experimental protocols, and collaborative, cross-sector research. It aims to foster a fertile dialogue between archaeologists, ethnologists, conservators, scientists, and textile historians/art-historians, providing a critical platform for the publication and circulation of cutting-edge research in the field.
